I have to say it: I was not one of those people who just "hung out a shingle" and had awesome success as a freelance web copywriter.
I was a strong web copywriter -- but I was pretty clueless about how to find clients to pay me for that.
When I was starting out, I assumed that because so many businesses needed freelance writing help, that I would easily be able to sell freelance writing help.
But I ran into a couple of painful truths:
- I'm not a natural salesperson. At all.
- Writing great marketing for myself was a lot harder than doing it for a client.
- Businesses need solid writing, but they often don't particularly want it.
